Sweet dates complimented by bitter coffee and topped with bittersweet chocolate. This Coffee Date cake is made with a combination of divine flavours.
This cake is exceptionally moist and packed with a delicious combination of flavours. The sweet dates complimented by the bitter coffee and topped with a glossy chocolate glaze give the cake an exceptional taste.
The flavour combination of coffee and dates is a takeaway from my trip to the middle east, where Arabic coffee is usually served with dates.
Arabic coffee is made from coffee beans roasted and cardamom, and is a traditional beverage in Arab culture. It is often served with dates, dried fruit, candied fruit or nuts. Arabic coffee is defined by the method of preparation and flavors, rather than the type of roast beans. It is boiled coffee that is not filtered, made black. Sugar is not typically added, so the dates act as a sweetener.
How to make Coffee Date cake?
- In a saucepan, combine the chopped dates, coffee and water. Bring it to a boil and remove from heat. Add Baking soda to this mixture and let it sit for 5 mins. The mixture will bubble up and become frothy when the baking soda is added . Baking soda helps soften the dates. After 5 minutes, blend the date mixture to a smooth paste.
2. For the cake, beat the butter and sugar together till pale and fluffy. Add the eggs one by one. Now add the dry ingredients and the date coffee paste. Combine well. Pour the batter into a cake pan and bake in the preheated oven.
3. To prepare the chocolate glaze, combine the chopped chocolate and cream in a small saucepan over low heat till it melts and forms a glossy glaze. Remember to keep the heat low as the chocolate and cream could burn over high heat. Place the cake over a platter and pour the glaze over the cake to cover the top and let it drip over the sides. This glaze is optional, the cake tastes great without the chocolate glaze too 🙂
Storing
Store the cake in an airtight container and it should be fresh for 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Tastes best the day its made. 🙂

Made this cake as per recipe – turned out to be fantastic!! Definitely going to make it again (and again).
I was unsure about adding the glaze, so prepared half the quantity which was also enough for me.
All these cakes are commendable. Tried and highly recommended.
That is just so lovely, will definitely try it this Christmas ?
