A comforting, hearty dish with a unique twist, this Indian-inspired Prawn Pie is a twist on the classic shepherd’s pie, a MUST-TRY!

I’ve always loved the cozy comfort of a classic Shepherd’s Pie, but I wanted to put my own twist on it using one of my favorite ingredients: prawns! This Indian-inspired Prawn Pie combines the creamy mashed potato topping we all know and love with a filling packed with spicy, aromatic prawns. A delightful fusion twist, swapping the traditional minced meat with flavorful prawns and incorporating Indian spices, that’s sure to impress and quickly become a family favourite

Why You’ll Love This Prawn Pie

  • Indian Flavours: The warm, aromatic spices like cumin and garam masala elevate the dish, giving it a unique Indian flair.
  • Quick and Easy: This recipe is simple, requiring basic ingredients you probably already have at home.
  • Comfort Food: The creamy mashed potato topping and spicy prawn filling make this pie the ultimate comfort food.

My Tips for the Perfect Prawn Pie

  • Customize the Spice Level: If you prefer a milder dish, use less chili powder and garam masala, or if you love heat like me, feel free to add more! You can adjust the recipe to your taste.
  • Fresh vs. Frozen Prawns: While frozen prawns are convenient, using fresh prawns will give the dish an extra burst of flavour. I prefer using small prawns to make this recipe, since they’re more flavourful, but feel free to use whatever you can get your hands on.
  • Make It Cheesy: For an indulgent twist, sprinkle a little grated cheese on top of the mashed potatoes before baking.
  • Don’t overcook the prawns: Be careful to not over the cook the prawns as they will get cooked further while baking. We dont want them to be rubbery.

Serving the Prawn Pie

This dish is best served at room temperature.. I love to garnish it with freshly chopped coriander for a pop of color and freshness. It pairs wonderfully with a crisp green salad or some roasted veggies on the side. Give this recipe a go, and let me know how it turns out!

Storing

If you would like to have this hot, you can prepare the filling and mashed potato topping in advance. Just assemble the pie, and refrigerate it. When you’re ready to eat, just bake it as per the instructions. You can also store the baked pie in the refrigerator cover with wrap, or in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
